I read and re-read this article - three times to be precise, and I honestly don't understand the uproar. I think people are reading between lines that simply don't exist. Quote: "But she said she doesn´t consider herself a reformed romance writer. She still has respect for the genre and is active in Romance Writers of America. She´s just writing something different now." A lot of romance authors go on to write "something different". I've heard straight from romance fans that they become insulted because they supposedly supported said author and how DARE they switch genres? Readers feel betrayed. I don't understand it. As with any author, if he or she writes a book that doesn't hook me, I simply go on to someone else. There's certainly enough variety to satisfy everyone's reading tastes.
Let's be realistic. When Ms. Hatcher started writing romance there was a strict formula (ooh, I know, bad word *g*) that publishers wanted followed. I find it interesting that she was never comfortable writing about sex. So, now, she has an avenue that she IS comfortable writing in. Ms. Hatcher obviously followed the formula required of her because her writing was THAT important to her. Maybe?
