Well, since you write mainly historicals, this certainly makes sense. :-) Marriage then was basically the only way to make a lasting commitment, although I must admit that I always enjoy plots in which the protagonists give in to their feelings before making it official. In contemporaries this forced marriage thing doesn't work so well for me and I must admit that one of my pet peeves is the characters' proposing after three weeks and then getting married. It has an old-fashioned ring to me and doesn't reflect my own experiences at all. For what it's worth, I think you can make a commitment nowadays without a marriage certificate, and I am always happy when a romance ends without the protagonists getting married immediately. If the story is good, I know they will stay together anyway. :-)


: I do have to confess that whenever the plot permits, I try to get my characters married off before they "do the deed". But not every plot permits that. But even that ends up being a moral lesson because the hero's first thought is usually, "Hmmmm...this love without commitment thing isn't going to work. I need to marry this woman and spend the rest of my life with her."
