I heard about this a few years ago on a news program and was amazed! Some people see colors and shapes when they listen to music, some people see certain letters or numbers as a color, and some people can taste a sound.

I actually experience the 'tasting a sound' - usually from deep voices like Leonard Nimoy or Keith David. I read once about a man who had to break up with a woman because hearing her name caused him to taste broccoli (which he hates). Sad And a woman who tastes hot chocolate every time her husband says her name - she doesn't mind that! Very Happy

Quote:
This phenomenon, called "synaesthesia" - from the Greek "syn" (with) and "aisthesis" (sensation) - consists of the pairing of two bodily senses by which the perception of a determined stimulus activates a different subjective perception with no external stimulus (in science, the evoker stimulus is called inducer and the additional experience concurrent).

Has anyone here ever experienced things like that?

To a small degree--and I'm not sure that it's truly synaesthesia. However, certain smells invoke tastes and vice versa. For example, the taste of Mountain Dew invokes the smell of a mouse's nest, such as might be found in old bureau or chest. That's why I've drunk only one swallow of the beverage.

Researchers say that one in 300 people have a version of this - but I'm sure you'd prefer it to be more pleasant. Poor thing!

I haven't noticed it lately, but 20 years or so ago, I tended to identify certain smells as colors. A certain smell would smell yellow or red or orange or green. Those were the only colors that ever resonated with me.

To a fairly limited degree. I can sometimes taste music or colours.
