Kerstin,

Do you mean Rosario's blog? Her's is quite good. Also, do you have the address for Maili's? I haven't run across hers. Sad

Yes, I did mean Rosario. Thanks for giving me the name. IIRC Maili closed down her blog some time ago. Maybe she reopened it in the meantime but I don't have the link anymore.

Kerstin

Won't anyone clue me in about the cabal thing? I really don't know what it means. Please help or I must die dumb.

A cabal is a group of conspirators or a secret society.

"A cabal is a number of persons united in some close design, usually to promote their private views and interests in church or state by intrigue. Cabals are secret organizations composed of a few designing persons; a political cabal is often called a junta. The term can also be used to refer to the designs of such persons. The term also holds a general meaning of intrigue and conspiracy. Its usage carries strong connotations of shadowy corners and occult influence; a cabal is more evil and selective than, say, a faction, which is simply selfish."

Willaful, you only get stuff from the homosexual agenda when you convert straight people! Then it's a toaster at first.

Thanks you very much! It is not quite what I thought it is. Interesting, a word to keep in mind. One can say about Mrs. Giggles what one wants but the lady is creative and inventive. I only wished she would put her energy and intelligence into more worthy causes.

[Well, for some people (and note that I say not all!) their blogs are a big ego thing and they get a kick out of it, it is their drug as long as they have fans and like celebrities they can't stand not to be taken notice of. It is kind of like Paris Hilton going to a party and nobody is interested in her any longer, no paparazzi, nothing. It would be hell for her. I'm not a blog person myself. There are good blogs out there, I remember enjoying Maili's for some time and also one South-American poster from here had her own blog, I have forgotten her name, which I quite liked. But even those I did not follow faithfully. I find forums like these much more interesting and diverse, you have more topics to choose from and more people to discuss with.

OT: I went on student's exchange when I was sixteen. I spent some time in a small town in Ohio. Coming from an university city myself, it was a cultural shock and skewered my perception of Americans for a long time until I spent time with a lovely family in Iowa as a part of a city exchange program (the city was not all that big either). I think, looking back, that I just was very unlucky with my choice of family-they were weird people and you can meet weird people everywhere (Just to give you an example: They forced me to buy a skirt to go to church. I had nice, black business-like slacks and a white blouse for such occasions but I had to spend nearly all my travel money on an ugly skirt that I never wore again).
I never made any negative experiences with Americans ever since.

Kerstin, thanks for explaining, I don't read blogs so I admit to knowing very little about them. I always thought they were about one person giving their opinion on this or that and that's never appealed to me. I too like the diversity of discussion groups where you get a variety of opinions and reviews from more than one person.

I'm sorry you had a bag experience in Ohio, I would have found that horrible as well. I live in a rural small town now after moving from a big city (this is my husband's home town) and I absolutely love it there. It still feels like a miracle that I get to live here and it's been over 15 years, it's so beautiful. This is why I think small town romance appeals to me, it has been such a positive in my own life. I would have been miserable in your shoes in Ohio as well, and add to that you are in a foreign county to boot. I'm glad to hear you've had some positive experiences here as well.

Still waiting for someone else to chime in and tell me they like small town romances, since we're supposed to have so many of them here! Anyone...?

Linda

Do I get a toaster for reviewing several m/m romances for AAR? One of the nice toasters at work died, and we could use a new one. Laughing And how do we go about earning a toaster oven? Ours caught fire recently. Wink

Kerstin and Maggie, the last I heard, Maili no longer had her blog but she was on Twitter. She also occasionally contributes to Dear Author under the name Jaili and you can find most of her posts for us at these links:

REALLY! I am SO excited! I have never been part of a cabal before, and after reading tons of paranormal books, I want to know a few things. 1. Does it come with good looking, but lonely, werewolves and vampires? 2. Do I have to wear a pointy, black hat all the time? 3. Does my allegiance come with extended lifetime warranty on my body? 4. Will I become young, beautiful, and rich when I sign up? 5. Are the cabal meetings on a rotating basis, or do they always take place in the AAR mansion? 6. Will I be able to fly? 7. Do I still have to pay income tax?

Lynda, thank you for making me laugh out loud after a long work day!

Personally, I'd be most interested in answers to questions 1 and 5. Do the lonely, unmated warrior males reside in the AAR mansion and where is it? If we have that special scent and mate one, do we get to move into the mansion?

The tax issue is an important consideration as well. Good questions.

Who cares about taxes! If the answers to questions 1-6 are YES, where do I to swear fealty? Cool

I'm not sure if you know this (and I hadn't until recently!), but bloggers are giving away stuff as expensive as laptops to lucky followers and authors seem happy to grant interviews even to relatively small blogs. Then the FTC said something about fining bloggers for not disclosing whether they received free copies of books in order to write reviews. I'm still slightly flabbergasted by it all, because my impression is that it's more about the prizes than it is about the writing. I don't think that's true for ALL blogs, of course, but of a great many.

her.

The FTC ruling was quite a headache for many bloggers and I would imagine anxiety inducing, but it also exposed just how close some blogs are with the industry. So many disclosures went up it was funny.[/quote]

I've just read Mali's post on that, and it was a different, refreshing perspective on the issue. She says that many bloggers, mostly those from the US, thought it was an Orwellian measure intended to go after small blogs, when it was probably something else.

As a "blog person," I kind of agree. Increased traffic and winning new readers can be a great ego boost. What really proves a blogger's character is what he does when he comes off that high and it seems that people aren't reading anymore. (Silent readers are almost as depressing as no readers at all!)

Oh, speaking of "blog people" . . . Do you remember the scene in Kresley Cole's No Rest for the Wicked in which Sebastian (who is new to the Lore and to the modern world) is trying to keep all the new creatures straight and overhears someone say, "The blogs will go crazy!" (or something like that), and wonders, "Who are the blogs?" Laughing

In fairness, you'll find a variety of opinions within a certain blog ring or on the blog roll (i.e. list of blogs) of a single blog. Some blogs also have very vocal commenters who spice up the discussion in the comments box. It just takes extra effort to find the ones which appeal to you, in terms of variety and diversity in readership.

Having said that, I often feel sad for bloggers who write great, thought-provoking posts and gets no comments except, "Great review!" or the like. They'd definitely get more and meatier responses if they shared their opinions on a message board--but that doesn't mean that the very act of publishing their thoughts isn't pleasure enough!
