Set on You got a DIK at AAR.

Sassy, warmhearted and sensual, Set on You is a really lovely book about physical fitness and true love coming in all shapes and sizes.

Scott Ritchie is instantly the most annoying man that Crystal Chen has ever met; the cocky firefighter keeps stealing her favorite squat rack.  Crystal, a personal trainer and Instagram influencer, is constantly battling back Opinions from trolls and other online naysayers because she keeps a focus on fitness without highlighting weight loss. She immediately goes head to head with Scott over the rack, push comes to shove, and their one-upmanship contest leads to a playful rivalry.  They’re both horrified to walk into an engagement party and realize that they’re grandchildren of the bride and groom.

Working on their grandparents’ wedding forces them to get to know each other on a personal basis, and the more they know about each other, the bigger their attraction grows.  But those trolls rear their ugly heads again when pictures of Crystal and Scott together go viral.  Can their love withstand the jabs of strangers?

Looking for old skool? Here’s a Linda Howard from the beginning of this century. We gave it a B.

Sarah Stevens has a plan. She’ll keep taking high-paying butler/bodyguard jobs for another couple of years, add the money she makes to her savings, then take a year or two off to travel the world. Her current job as butler/bodyguard to retired Judge Roberts is going to go a long way towards fulfilling that goal. Hmm, attractive female butler who’s also a bodyguard is a bit far-fetched, especially when the book opens with Sarah single-handedly foiling a robbery in the Judge’s home. But Linda Howard being Linda Howard, she pulls it off.

She also, once again, has written an alpha male who thinks and talks like a guy. Detective Thompson Cahill shows up when he hears about the robbery. His first reaction regarding Sarah and her job puts her squarely in the bimbo category – only his terms are far more blunt. When he’s talking to his guy friends he talks like a guy. He’s not waxing poetic about her eyes (although he does privately admire them), he’s talking about how hot she makes him. Refreshing in a genre in which men’s internal dialogue often sounds anything but male.

Okay, Sarah and Cahill have met. They’re attracted but fighting the feeling. She doesn’t want to mess up her plan and he’s coming out of a messy, painful divorce. Seemingly standard fare. Throw in a couple of murders and Sarah’s connection to them and you’ve got what just about every other suspense author is offering. What those other authors don’t have is Linda Howard’s down-to-earth, yet complex handling of the elements. Her dialogue is clever and frequently laugh-out-loud funny and/or erotically charged. The plot, though tried and true, is bolstered by a romance that is entirely believable. A believable romance may sound like a required element, but it’s just not all that common in today’s romantic suspense.

I adore Three Nights of Sin. For me, it’s a DIK all the way. (Our reviewer liked it but not as much as I do!)

Marietta Winters contacts Gabriel Noble because she is desperate. Her brother Kenny stands accused of murder, and not just any murder; he was found beside the mangled body of a woman who was the latest victim of a serial killer known as the Middlesex murderer. The Bow Street Runner on the scene accused him of the crime, and now he is imprisoned and the Winters family is in ruins. But Gabriel Noble has a reputation for solving problems (in return for either money or favors), so Marietta comes to him for help.

At first it seems she has made a devil’s bargain. Gabriel has little use for society women, and since her other brother has virtually bankrupted the family, Marietta can only offer favors as payment for Gabriel’s help. Clearly, he has the upper hand. He shocks Marietta by ensconcing her in a private home with no live-in servants. He wants for both of them to be able to come and go as they please without attracting notice, and he has already identified Marietta’s chief asset: She has the type of face that can blend in anywhere. He buys her clothing suitable for a variety of stations (particularly light skirt and shop girl) and they set about making inquiries. They visit the scene of the crime, get the lay of the land, and talk to the principal players. Meanwhile, Gabriel calls in favors from others so that they can visit Kenny in prison, and delay the trial.

During one of their forays in a victim’s home, they discover a diary. Though no names are named, it seems clear that she was an aristocratic woman, part of a circle of friends who used their elevated station as a way to entice and coerce young men into performing acts against their will. Marietta finds herself both fascinated and horrified by the diary, and part of the allure is that Gabriel clearly does not want her to read it. As their investigation progresses, it seems equally clear that Gabriel has more than a passing acquaintance with the principal players – on both sides.

Want some holiday vibes? We liked this one a lot.

Christie Ridgway has many good AAR grades to her name. She scores again with Must Love Mistletoe, a wonderfully amusing and poignant story of two reunited lovers.

Bailey Sullivan (named after George Bailey in the holiday movie It’s a Wonderful Life) doesn’t like Christmas, despite her name, and hasn’t celebrated it for the last ten years. Her parents own and operate a store dedicated to Christmas and growing up with the behind-the-scenes merchandising of the holiday killed her enthusiasm for it. This year, however, she won’t be able to ignore it. Her mother and stepfather, who separated three months ago, haven’t stepped one foot into the store because they don’t want to chance seeing the other. That’s bad news since it is December, the store’s busiest and most profitable month. The longtime employees make a desperate call to Bailey, who grudgingly agrees to take time from her job to go run the store.

While staying at her parents’ house, she sees an SUV parked at the house next door and dreads that it may mean that Finn Jacobson, her teenage sweetheart, is visiting his grandmother. It turns out she’s right. Although he’s older, she recognizes him, and Finn shows that he recognizes her by mentioning that she left him ten years ago without even saying goodbye.

What follows is a wonderful reunion romance between two people who loved each other very much when they were teenagers and who never got over that love even after one seemed to have cruelly abandoned the other. Bailey and Finn are appealing characters and Finn in particular is quite appealing – totally sexy, totally manly, and vulnerable enough to make any woman sigh deeply. Their love scenes show the love deepening between them and are hot and yummy, too. There’s also a great secondary romance between Bailey’s separated mother and stepfather, and the older couple has a hot love scene, too!

We loved Time to Shine!

Time to Shine is simply lovely, a low-angst, briskly-paced romance between two thoroughly endearing characters who, at first, seem like a total mismatch, but who are slowly revealed to be absolutely perfect for each other. The author has – very wisely – created something completely different from her previous work; other than being set in the world of professional hockey, this book bears little resemblance to anything in the Game Changers stories. It’s set in a completely different universe, and the characters are younger (twenty-three and twenty-four), and at a different stage in their careers, so this has more the flavour of a New Adult story. But it’s full of the things I’ve come to love about her books – excellent characterisation, a strong supporting cast, genuine warmth and plenty of humour.

Like most hockey players, Landon Stackhouse – the talented goalie for the Saskatoon Bandits AFL team – dreams of one day getting the call to go to play for the NHL. When that call comes – following the injury sustained by the back-up goalie for the Calgary Outlaws – Landon is ready and excited, but he’s also realistic and expects that his NFL début will be spent mostly sitting on the bench before he hops a plane back home. Finding out that he’s actually going to be going on a short road trip with the team is something of a relief; he knows himself well enough to know that being busy is the best way of preventing him from spending all his off-ice time alone and up in his head. The travel will be good for him.

Landon has spent a little time in Calgary before, most recently at the Outlaws’ prospects training camp, but he’s not going to be sticking around so he doesn’t expect any of his new – temporary – teammates to spend any time getting to know him. Which is why he’s surprised when Casey Hicks, the team’s pint-sized, superstar left-winger, not only remembers his name, but greets him like an old friend and strikes up a conversation. Landon, who is quiet, shy and introverted – the complete opposite of Casey – really isn’t sure what to make of him

Casey is a sweet, sunshiny chatterbox full of charm and energy and kindness who has never met a stranger. He’s the son of a hockey legend, but there’s not an ounce of ego or arrogance to him; he’s confident and outgoing and has no verbal filter – he knows he can be a lot to take and doesn’t blink an eye when his teammates rib him for being a bit dumb; he knows they love him, and he loves them. He loves being around people and is more than happy to seek out the latest member of the team and sets out to make him feel comfortable and included, in and out of the locker room.
