One Snowy Night with Lord Hauxton by Laura Martin has a couple you’ll find yourself rooting for. (Our review is here.)

Thomas, Lord Hauxton, has left London to visit Hailsham Hall, the estate of his friend, James.  James and his wife, Caroline are not currently in residence at their home but have invited Thomas to stay.  There, he hopes to gain some peace away from the season.

Henrietta flees London after an almighty row with her mother, following that lady’s discovery that Henrietta has been secretly exercising her artistic talents and her destruction of the painting into which she’s been pouring heart and soul for almost a year.  Even though the snow is starting to fall, Henrietta sets out on horseback for her cousin Caroline’s  home – Hailsham Hall.  Heartsick and exhausted, she makes her way to her usual room and wearily climbs into bed – shocking both herself and its occupant!  Henrietta is beyond mortified at her mistake and insists on finding another room, her embarrassment  only increased by the fact that she finds Thomas attractive.

In the morning, the two discover that they’re snowed in with no one around but the servants.  Henrietta and Thomas begin spending their days together, including taking Caroline’s dog for walks.  These walks almost always end in disaster, including a maid tripping on icy stairs and breaking her leg and the dog and Thomas nearly falling into a mostly frozen pond.

It doesn’t take long for Thomas and Henrietta to begin having feelings for each other.  However, Thomas has lost everyone he has ever loved; his parents, his wife and their child, and the young woman he had hoped would become his second wife.  Because of this, he has vowed to never remarry so he can’t be hurt again. Henrietta also wishes not to marry for fear a husband will force her to stop painting.  Before Thomas and Henrietta can sort everything out, James and Caroline return and the couple is forced back to reality after the idyllic holiday they had been sharing.

Unlacing Lady Thea by Louise Allen is an engaging, very sexy read. (Our review is here.)

Rhys and Thea are perfect for each other, something which is clear right from their first scenes together. There’s a terrific chemistry between them, they are comfortable with each other (apart from when they’re in the grip of almost uncontrollable lust!), and their interactions show a true depth of affection and understanding, born of long-standing acquaintance. Rhys is handsome, charming and a little bit naughty – although I did want to slap him once or twice for the length of time it took him to actually see Thea. Even though he finds himself physically aware of her womanly curves straight away, he dismisses it as mere lust and determines to ignore it, because of course, he can’t possibly feel like that about his tree-climbing, frog-hunting, childhood companion. Besides, she deserves love and he doesn’t want emotional entanglements.

But when he does finally see her, the consequences are explosive: I think Louise Allen has written one of the sexiest M&B Historicals I’ve ever read! At the same time, she has developed and maintained a strong emotional connection between the hero and heroine which endures even when they’re both treading carefully around each other, afraid to reveal their true feelings.

I liked the fact that Thea doesn’t suddenly turn into a beauty once she buys herself some nice frocks and has her hair decently styled. She‘s never going to be pretty, but Rhys gradually comes to find her zest for life and her strength of character devastatingly attractive and to see that his “ordinary” friend has turned into an extraordinary young woman.

Unlacing Lady Thea is a very well written and engaging romance in which the central relationship captivated me from the outset. It’s a quick, but emotionally satisfying read, full of humor and sensuality, and I finished it with a big smile on my face.

We gave A Warriner to Seduce Her by Virginia Heath a DIK. Our review is here.

Jake is pleasantly surprised when he discovers that the lovely woman he’d been observing from his vantage point at the edge of the ballroom at Almack’s is none other than the woman he’s been instructed to seduce.  He’d been expecting a dowdy, nunnish-type, not a lush beauty with honey-gold hair, a spectacular figure and a dry sense of humour, who is nowhere near as impressionable as he’d been led to believe.  They converse amiably for a short while, until Jake, still tired and annoyed at the cancellation of his leave, makes a misstep and attempts to soften her up too quickly. Fliss’ warm, friendly manner evaporates and she makes it clear she’s seen through Jake’s practiced charm and hackneyed compliments and has no further interest in conversing with him….

Fliss can’t deny that she’s been attracted to Jake since the first time they met, but she’s not interested in charming, sexy and gorgeous, she wants respectable and dependable.  She is determined to steer clear of him, but somehow, he’s always there when she needs help, and keeps turning up at the social events her uncle insists she attend… and the more time she spends with Jake, the more Fliss can’t help liking him.  She sees something – very occasionally – behind the suave, rakish façade that interests her, the possibility that there lies a man of more substance than he is willing to reveal to the world; he’s amusing, self-deprecating and genuinely charming, and she can’t help falling for him….

Boasting a strong plotline, two attractive central characters with scorching chemistry and a wonderful cast of secondary characters, A Warriner to Seduce Her is a superb end to an excellent series, and is the third (or fourth?) novel of Ms. Heath’s to grace my Keeper shelf.
