New Special Title Listing: Big City Romances

Thursday, May 9th, 2013

chicago I’ve written here before about my fondness for the Special Settings list at AAR and posted here once about my love of romances set in Greece. I’ve scoured the Special Settings list numerous times for other unusual settings and have discovered some great reads. But there’s another type of setting that I’m particularly fond of and that currently doesn’t have its own list: big cities.

Romance readers often complain about the excessive number of small town/rural romances, particularly in category romances. While I don’t hate small town romances, I can only handle so many romances featuring small town sheriffs, or visitors from the big city who discover the wonders of small towns. As a long-time Chicago resident, I often find myself longing for big city romances (and I’m not talking about European Historicals set in London). (more…)

list We’re at it again! With the help of our readers we have found the right formula for adding new titles to the Special Title Listings. This month we are opening: (1) Nerds & Absent-Minded Professors, (2) Bluestockings and Feminists, (3) Beauty is in the Eye and (4) Unrequited Love. Special Title Listings – An Update

Monday, April 29th, 2013

list When we embark on adding to one of our Special Title Listings, we are elated when there are lots of titles nominated, because, although it means spending several hours on the computer, it also means discovering fascinating new titles. Considering this, we are very glad that we got so many responses for our Unusual Professions and Met as Children Lists – 52 and 47 respectively. We are especially grateful that you volunteered so many details about the books, because that made it much easier for us to decide if a title fit the list. Thanks a lot! (more…)

Special Title Listings: A Little More Information Please

Monday, March 11th, 2013

library-2 Since reopening the Special Title Listings we have learned many things but the prevalent realization was that unless we had read the book in question, we had to do some serious investigating to ensure the titles submitted fit the definition of the category. Some categories are easy – Unusual Professions would be a category where we could find reviews that would let us know the occupations of the protagonists if our readers forgot to put in the information.

More Special Title Listings in the Works

Monday, February 18th, 2013

list Last August we announced we were going to re-open the Special Title Listings again and asked for your help in a post here. We asked you to list in the comments section of that post up to ten of your favorite Special Title Lists that you wanted to see updated first.

We’ve followed through with your initial suggestions. Since August, we’ve updated the 14 lists that you indicated were your favorites and most deserving of being updated first. We took a brief break from working on the Lists to do the Annual Poll in January and February, but would like to get started again with the Special Title Listing updating process – after all, there are still over 50 lists that need attention.

We enjoy working in tandem with our readers and decided to ask for your help again. Your favorite lists have new titles added and now we’d like you to take another look at all of the Special Title Listings that haven’t been updated. From those we’d like to know which lists you would now like to see updated. You can see all of the Special Title Listings here. Just scroll through the page and any list that hasn’t been updated since 2010 or earlier is now a candidate for updating (the date each list was last updated is listed below the name of the list).

Just as the first time, we would like you to list up to ten of the remaining categories that you would like to see updated first, in numbered order of your preference, in the comments section below. We’ll give you one week to list your preferences. After that point, we’ll tabulate the results and begin opening up the lists for new title suggestions in March, starting with your remaining favorites.

We look forward to your responses and are excited to team up with you again to revitalize the Special Title Listings.

Green Romance – A New Special Titles List?

Monday, January 21st, 2013

An environmentalist myself, I like to read about other environmentalists. Folks who care about nature and who are prepared to adapt their lifestyle so as to deal with it more carefully are almost automatically likeable to me. Which is why I really enjoy them as heroes or heroines in my romance reading. Considering how big a topic the environment is in real life, it is quite astonishing, however, that environmental protection does not play a particularly large role in the world of romance. Now one might argue it is not sexy – after all, what’s sexy about getting double glazing or riding a bike? – but protecting the environment is caring, is looking beyond one’s own pleasure, and that to me is one of the core themes of romance.

More Special Title Lists Now Open!

Tuesday, October 16th, 2012

Start searching through your reading records, because today we’re opening up five more Special Title Lists for updates. From today, October 16 through Sunday, October 28 at midnight we’ll be accepting submissions for the following lists: (1) Reunited, (2) Cabin and Road Romances, (3) Tortured Heroes, (4) Arranged Marriages, and (5) Shotgun Weddings. We hope you’ll recommend some of your favorite romances for these lists. Before you send in any recommendations, please take a minute to check the descriptions of each list below and then visit the page itself to check out some of the romances that are already on the lists.

Reunited: Romances in this list “have heroes and heroines who loved each other before, were separated, and are now reunited. These stories tell of their second chance at love.” This does not include one-night stands featuring strangers, after which the hero and heroine don’t see each other for years. The couple must have loved each other in the past.

Updating the Special Title Listings

Tuesday, October 9th, 2012

We’re pleased to announce that after nearly two years, the first of what will hopefully be many updates, have been completed for four of the Special Title Lists: Beta Heroes, Favorite Funnies, Marriages of Convenience, and Troubled Marriages. A big thanks to all of the AAR readers who took the time to send in their suggestions for additions to these four lists. We’ll be opening up additional lists on Monday, October 15, so make certain to check back here on that day.

We have incorporated most, but not all, of the recommendations submitted by readers onto the revised lists. While a couple of readers wrote on their submission form that we should just accept everything the readers entered, we used the three criteria stated at the top of the submission form when reviewing the submissions. Any additions to the list have to be: (1) the best of the best, (2) stand the test of time, and (3) actually fit the list for which they were submitted.

Special Title Listings are Back!

Monday, August 13th, 2012

drumroll We asked you, our readers, what you wanted to see on the site and we heard you loud and clear. We are pleased to announce that AAR’s Special Title Listings are being dusted off and re-worked and we would love to get more reader input in how you would like to see the list managed. For those who have lobbied successfully for this change we know you are excited, and for those of you who have not visited the Special Title Listings, we invite you to head on over there and take a look around.

The Special Title Listings were started in 1996 and are organized differently than by genre, setting, or grade alone. After all, when browsing a bookshelf for a great new read, the simple classification of “historical romance” or “category romance” is not enough information for a reader to decide to pick up the book.
