I loved The Girl is Murder and can't wait for The Girl is Trouble. A book similar to this is What I Saw and How I Lied by Judy Blundell. It is a mystery set in late 1940's Florida. The narrator is a bit younger than Iris but she grows up throughout the mystery. The writer does a good job of letting the reader figure things out a step ahead of her and yet not having her so far behind we wonder about her mentally. In fact, it gives the book a nice edge because we always know what she is on the verge of discovering and we also know how difficult that discovery will be. It's not a girl detective story but it is an excellent 1940's era mystery.
