I love that the show works so hard to keep storylines quiet until it happens. I’ve been spoiler-free for a few years now and I enjoy the viewing experience much more because of it.

but the best on TV ever? No. “The Sopranos,” “Deadwood” and most particularly “The Wire” easily surpass it for writing skills and complexity of narrative and world-building.

And that’s just US TV! How about “Edge of Darkness,” “Boys from the Black Stuff,” “GBH”, and almost anything by Dennis Potter, particularly the original (Michael Gambon) version of “The Singing Detective,” which both Davids Milch and Simon acknowledge as the best of the best?
