AAR Staff Top Ten Favorites: Cindy’s Picks

Tuesday, May 7th, 2013

Hi, I’m Cindy, I have been doing AAR Reader polls with LinnieGayl and Lee for the last 7 years, and now I help with the updating of the Special Title Listings with Rike and LinnieGayl. It would be fair to say I love reading lists, my favorite lists being AAR Readers’ lists of favorite books. Now, ask me to rank my favorite romances and I freeze up. But I’ve learned from the best how every list created by a reader may have some caveats attached. I loved reading Jenna and Maggie’s lists because each came at it in different ways. Jenna took Pride and Prejudice off the table – it is just her very favorite book, it’s a classic and almost always ends up on a reader’s top romance ballot, so she posted it as a given. Maggie spoke of the books that created a journey to her reading preferences today and she mentioned the very first series book she read that would be considered an emotional favorite but left it off her final list.

In listing my favorites I originally made the rule that no author could be on the list more than one time. It forced me to think in a different way. Ask me to list my top 10 favorite Anne Stuart books and it would be agonizing, but to only allow one book made me look for the very best of each author’s work. I then promptly broke my rule because one author surprised me and showed me she could make any situation work. And finally, knowing this list wasn’t etched in stone helped me to move forward because I know tomorrow I can change my mind. With that, my list: (more…)

New Special Title Lists are Open!

Monday, May 6th, 2013

list We’re at it again! With the help of our readers we have found the right formula for adding new titles to the Special Title Listings. This month we are opening: (1) Nerds & Absent-Minded Professors, (2) Bluestockings and Feminists, (3) Beauty is in the Eye and (4) Unrequited Love. We look forward to seeing your submissions for these lists starting today Monday May 6th and going for the next two weeks ending Sunday May 19th at midnight. As a reminder, any additions to the list have to be: (1) the best of the best, (2) stand the test of time, and (3) actually fit the list for which they were submitted. (more…)

Special Title Listings – An Update

Monday, April 29th, 2013

list When we embark on adding to one of our Special Title Listings, we are elated when there are lots of titles nominated, because, although it means spending several hours on the computer, it also means discovering fascinating new titles. Considering this, we are very glad that we got so many responses for our Unusual Professions and Met as Children Lists – 52 and 47 respectively. We are especially grateful that you volunteered so many details about the books, because that made it much easier for us to decide if a title fit the list. Thanks a lot! (more…)

Special Title Listings: A Little More Information Please

Monday, March 11th, 2013

library-2 Since reopening the Special Title Listings we have learned many things but the prevalent realization was that unless we had read the book in question, we had to do some serious investigating to ensure the titles submitted fit the definition of the category. Some categories are easy – Unusual Professions would be a category where we could find reviews that would let us know the occupations of the protagonists if our readers forgot to put in the information.

More Special Title Listings in the Works

Monday, February 18th, 2013

list Last August we announced we were going to re-open the Special Title Listings again and asked for your help in a post here. We asked you to list in the comments section of that post up to ten of your favorite Special Title Lists that you wanted to see updated first.

We’ve followed through with your initial suggestions. Since August, we’ve updated the 14 lists that you indicated were your favorites and most deserving of being updated first. We took a brief break from working on the Lists to do the Annual Poll in January and February, but would like to get started again with the Special Title Listing updating process – after all, there are still over 50 lists that need attention.

We enjoy working in tandem with our readers and decided to ask for your help again. Your favorite lists have new titles added and now we’d like you to take another look at all of the Special Title Listings that haven’t been updated. From those we’d like to know which lists you would now like to see updated. You can see all of the Special Title Listings here. Just scroll through the page and any list that hasn’t been updated since 2010 or earlier is now a candidate for updating (the date each list was last updated is listed below the name of the list).

Just as the first time, we would like you to list up to ten of the remaining categories that you would like to see updated first, in numbered order of your preference, in the comments section below. We’ll give you one week to list your preferences. After that point, we’ll tabulate the results and begin opening up the lists for new title suggestions in March, starting with your remaining favorites.

We look forward to your responses and are excited to team up with you again to revitalize the Special Title Listings.

poll

Thanks yet again for your continued support of the Annual Poll. We would also like to thank all the authors, publishers and readers who publicized the poll, whether online or just by word of mouth.

This year’s AAR Annual Reader Poll for Best 2012 Romance Books had some pretty interesting new obstacles. With the proliferation of so many ebooks being published, the votes for authors, titles and characters were incredibly wide-ranging. Publication dates also caused some confusion for readers and for us. As a result, we took extra precautions to make sure books were published for the first time in 2012 and were not previously published in a digital format. Another interesting outcome is that only two categories yielded honorable mentions meaning almost every category had a standalone winner showing that this year our readers were very decisive about the books they loved. And finally, there is a phenomenon that we pollsters are familiar with called ‘vote splitting’. This is where an author has more than one book published in the year and each title garners its own set of votes thus splitting the author’s chances of winning in a specific category by up to 50%. Many authors have had this obstacle in their path and still found their way into the winner’s circle, for example, this year, Sarah Mayberry had two books vying for attention, nevertheless, she won a category while Sherry Thomas was able to pull off an outright win even with a three title handicap. So without further ado, here are some favorite authors and a newbie who received wins and an Honorable Mention. (Note: Honorable Mentions are awarded when a second (or third) place title receives within 20% of the votes cast for the winner.)

For complete poll results, continue reading here.

And…It’s Time for the 17th Annual Reader Poll!!

Monday, January 7th, 2013

Doldrums from the holidays setting in yet? Too much snow or rain or just too cold to go outside? Nothing new on TV? Well, what better way to start off 2013 than by voting in the AAR Annual Poll? Yes, it’s that time of year again and we want you to let us know which stories, authors and characters you loved from books published in 2012. Today we are thrilled to be opening our 17th AAR Annual Reader Poll.

The Annual Reader Poll is very special here at AAR. The poll is a way for AAR readers to let us – and authors and publishers – know which books you feel deserve honors (and maybe those that don’t). We know that several AAR readers keep spreadsheets, Goodreads/Librarything shelves, or charts in some form or another and hopefully those will help you in filling out the poll. If you haven’t kept a spreadsheet or reading chart (and there are just as many readers who don’t), you can always use the Power Search function at AAR to search for reviews from the 2012 reading year. In Power Search you can search by genre, reviewer, year published, grade, and other categories which should help you in filling out your ballot. (more…)

Tuesday, December 18th, 2012

We’ve just posted the revised versions of three special title lists, including the Christmas Romances list. This seemed to be the perfect time to open up the Christmas list, and we’re glad we did. The revised list includes four full anthologies in which all of the stories were submitted, 23 full-length romances, and another 23 short stories. The new entries are in a variety of genres, from historical, to contemporary, to paranormal. No matter what your reading preference, if you’re in the mood for some Christmas reading suggestions, we think the new additions to the list will give you something to read. (more…)

New Lists Open this Month!

Monday, November 12th, 2012

In the spirit of keeping the momentum up we’re going to open five more categories on the Special Title Listings page. We have been getting such a great response(thank you all!) and we know how important these lists are to you, our readers, that we wanted to get one more update in before the end of the year. So we are pleased to open up the following categories for submissions: (1) Across the Tracks, (2) Christmas Romances, (3) Inter-Ethnic Romances, (4) Special Settings and (5) Luscious Love Stories. These categories will be open for submissions starting today Monday November 12th and ending Sunday November 25th at midnight. Four of the five categories are ones our readers asked to be updated first while the last one, Christmas Romances, seemed like the perfect addition since it’s about that time of the year. Once again, we are looking for the best of the best in these categories and we’ve included the definitions below. We’ve also included links so you can look over the titles currently on each of the lists. (more…)
