An interview with Courtney Milan (and a giveaway!)

Monday, December 30th, 2013

Countess ConspiracyI am a Courtney Milan fan. I’ve read all her novels and novellas. She shines for me in two very clear ways. One, she is a superb novella writer. Two, she incorporates science into her books seamlessly and accurately.

I contacted Ms. Milan via a mutual Twitter friend and asked if she’d answer a few questions. She graciously agreed to do so. (more…)

Books With Buzz: Grace Burrowes – and an ereader giveaway!

Tuesday, August 6th, 2013

GraceBurrowes Many historical romance readers know Grace Burrowes as the very prolific author of European historicals, many of which have been enjoyed by our reviewers and readers. Darius received a DIK review here, and many of her other books and novellas have been well-received also.

Burrowes’ latest release, Once Upon a Tartan takes readers to Scotland, where a smart, headstrong beauty has little use for an English lord’s highhanded ways. Hester Daniels and Tiberius Flynn are entrusted with the care of a little girl and while Hester wants her raised in her beloved – if rundown – home in Scotland, Tiberius insists that his prosperous estate is the only fit place for a child. And as they battle, other kinds of sparks start to fly! (more…)

Midweek EBook Giveaway!

Thursday, October 4th, 2012

As readers on this blog probably already know, I’m always on the lookout for an unusual (or at least under-utilitized) historical setting. And I would love to see some 20th century historicals! I’ve enjoyed Carrie Lofty’s books ever since I reviewed her debut novel, and her latest book, His Very Own Girl, promises to be a wonderful read.

Set during WWII, this book tells the story of of Lulu Davies, a British civilian pilot with the Air Transport Auxiliary, who has already lost her parents and her fiance to the war. She throws herself into her flying, but there is an American medic who is going to turn her world upside down. That would be Joe Weber, a medic assigned to the 82nd Airborne and stationed in England. The two have an intense romance in the days leading up to D-Day. If you haven’t read Carrie Lofty before, I personally think she tells a good story, and you can find an excerpt from His Very Own Girl here. Though I will warn you, that once you start reading, you just may end up buying!

Or, as you may have guessed from the blog title this morning, Pocket Books has generously provided a copy of His Very Own Girl for us to give away. Details are at the bottom of this post!

Are you more of a paranormal fan? Then you may want to pay attention to this one. In addition to Carrie Lofty’s latest historical, Pocket Books has also provided us with a giveaway copy of Lifestyles of the Rich and Undead, a recent release in Katie MacAlister’s Dark Ones series.

Lifestyles of the Rich and Undead is a short story featuring an interview with vampire Grayson Soucek, and is meant to serve as a prologue to MacAlister’s novella in the October 2012 anthology The Undead in my Bed. If you’re curious, you can enter the contest below, or you can find the story for purchase on Simon & Schuster’s website.

ENTRY DETAILS

Looking to win an eBook? The entry rules are simple – just comment below and let us know whether you want to be entered to win the Carrie Lofty novel, the Katie MacAlister short story, or both. The contest is open from now until Monday, October 8, 2012, at 11:59 p.m. EST And I’m sorry, but my sources at the publisher tell me their codes are good in the United States only. Good luck to all who enter!

Speaking of Audiobooks: Julie James Interview and Giveaway!

Monday, September 17th, 2012

9780425246955_AboutThatNig_CV.indd After getting a taste of the winning combination of author Julie James and narrator Karen White with Penguin’s release of Just the Sexiest Man Alive in 2010, romance audio fans have been begging for more from this talented team. After all, Julie’s A Lot Like Love won the Best Contemporary Romance award in AAR’s 2012 Annual Reader Poll and Something About You won that same award in 2011. And since Karen’s narration of Just the Sexiest Man Alive, she has been praised throughout the romance audio community for her performances.

Tantor Audio delighted those same fans by releasing Something About You this past June followed by A Lot Like Love in August. About That Night releases today and we decided that’s reason for a celebration. (more…)

Dream Lake by Lisa Kleypas Five-Book Giveaway (Giveaway Closed)

Monday, August 6th, 2012

LKSummer is 2/3 over and it’s a perfect time to relax with a great book – even better when it’s a highly anticipated book by a much-loved author.  Thanks to the generosity of Lisa and her publisher, I’ve got five copies of Dream Lake to giveaway to five lucky readers.

Honesty alert: I’m in the middle of this one now and I’m loving it.  The third in the author’s series of books set on Washington state’s San Juan Island, this one is Nolan brother Alex’s story.  Here’s what the publisher has to say about the book:

Dream Lake takes readers once again to the exquisite setting of Friday Harbor, and tells the story of Zoe Hoffman, an innkeeper who has all but given up on love. She’s a gentle, romantic soul, but has been so hurt in the past that she dare not trust her heart with anyone. Especially not Alex Nolan. Alex is the most haunted of all the Nolan brothers. He drinks to keep his demons at bay and not only has he given up on love, he has never, ever believed in it. Zoe and Alex are oil and water, fire and ice, sunshine and shadow. But sometimes, it takes only a glimmer of light to chase away the dark. Dream Lake is classic Lisa Kleypas: romantic, powerful, emotional, and magical.”

Sherry Thomas Book Celebration and ARC Giveaway (Contest Closed)

Monday, April 30th, 2012

BTBSince Sherry Thomas first burst onto the scene in 2008 her reputation has grown as one of the most literate and lush writers of romance.

Now, after a wait of two years (during which Sherry switched publishers), readers are about to delight in a new book by the author when Beguiling the Beauty, the first in the author’s new Fitzhugh series, is released tomorrow.  Here’s a plot description:

When the Duke of Lexington meets the mysterious Baroness von Seidlitz-Hardenberg on a transatlantic liner, he is fascinated. She’s exactly what he’s been searching for—a beautiful woman who interests and entices him. He falls hard and fast—and soon proposes marriage.

And then she disappears without a trace…

For in reality, the “baroness” is Venetia Easterbrook—a proper young widow who had her own vengeful reasons for instigating an affair with the duke. But the plan has backfired. Venetia has fallen in love with the man she despised—and there’s no telling what might happen when she is finally unmasked…

Sherry is celebrating her new release by giving AAR readers the chance to win one of five ARCs of Ravishing the Heiress, the second in the Fitzhugh series, to be released on July 3.  Want a tease?

RTHMillicent understands the terms of her arranged marriage all too well. She gets to be a Countess by marrying an impoverished Earl. And in return, the Earl Fitzhugh receives the benefit of her vast wealth, saving his family from bankruptcy. Because of her youth, they have agreed to wait eight years before consummating the marriage—and then, only to beget an heir. After which, they will lead separate lives.

It is a most sensible arrangement. Except for one little thing. Somehow Millie has fallen head over heels in love with her husband. Her husband, who has become her very best friend, but nothing more… Her husband, who plans to reunite with his childhood sweetheart, the beautiful and newly widowed Isabelle, as soon as he has honored the pact with his wife…

As the hour they truly become husband-and-wife draws near, both Millie and Fitzhugh must face the truth in their hearts. Has their pact bred only a great friendship—or has it, without either of them quite noticing, given rise to a great love?

To enter to win your ARC, simply leave a comment by Thursday, May 3rd at 11:59 p.m. Winners will be notified by email on Friday morning and will have 24 hours to respond.  If we don’t hear from you by Saturday morning, a new winner will be selected.  This giveaway is open only to readers in the U.S. and Canada and, since the contest is designed to get advance copies into the hands of readers who wouldn’t otherwise have access, if you review for another Web site or blog, please don’t enter.

Good luck to everyone. And happy reading!

The Madness of I MacWhen I discovered that Tantor was set to release Jennifer Ashley’s The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie on March 26th, I enthusiastically shared the news far and wide.  Published in 2009, it’s a favorite among romance readers winning Best Romance of 2009 in AAR’s Annual Reader Poll and ranking #10 in AAR’s 2010 Top 100 Romance Poll.  In print, we were mesmerized by hero Ian Mackenzie and, in audio, we hope to move the entire experience up a notch by actually hearing him interact in his matter-of-fact manner as he determinedly pursues Beth.

Today, we are celebrating the release of this much loved book with a giveaway and interviews with both author Jennifer Ashley and narrator Angela Dawe.

The Giveaway

We are giving away FIVE MP3 CD copies of The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie courtesy of Tantor Audio.  Place your name in the hat by commenting on this column by 11:59 p.m. eastern time on Thursday, March 22nd. Lisa, thanks so much for joining us today.  Could you please tell our readers a bit about Rainshadow Road?

Sandy,  thank you so much for inviting me!  Rainshadow Road is the first in a series of contemporary romances set in Friday Harbor,  Washington.  It’s about a young glass artist,  Lucy Marinn,  who is dumped by her boyfriend at the beginning of the story–and if that’s not bad enough,  she discovers that he’s dumped her for her younger sister!  So about fifteen minutes after this happens,  she sees this handsome stranger on the beach,  who happens to be Sam Nolan,  a local vineyard owner.

Interview and Giveaway with Author Heather Killough-Walden (Giveaway Closed)

Monday, November 28th, 2011

Heather Killough-Walden is about to publish her first paperback book, Avenger’s Angel. I’m a fan not only of Heather’s work but of the extraordinary path she forged to get this book published. Several years ago, Heather began publishing for free on several Internet sites and was struck by how positively readers responded to her work. It occurred to her that perhaps she could get paid to do what she loved, so she began self publishing her eBooks on Amazon. When one of her books hit number one on Amazon in the vampire category, her career took off. An agent sought her out, signed her, and now she has just published her first non-eBook with Signet, Avenger’s Angel.

I’m excited to say that Heather is giving five lucky readers each an autographed copy of her new book, Avenger’s Angel. Want one? Just comment on this post by 11:59 p.m. eastern time on Thursday, December 1st.  And, although we’d love for you to comment many times, you will only be entered in the contest once.  If you review for another Web site or blog, please abstain from entering. The winners will be notified by email on Friday morning and will have 24 hours to respond. Another winner will be selected on Saturday morning if the winner has not responded. Books will be mailed to the winner the following week.

Heather, thanks for taking the time to talk with AAR.
