Have you been watching Call The Midwife on PBS? Season Two just ended and those of us addicted to the show are bereft. Its the adaptation of a series of books by British nurse Jennifer Worth which chronicle her years working as a midwife in the East End of London. Set in the 50s, each episode is a vignette detailing issues of the time, such as racism, the lack of reliable birth control, prostitution, separation of the classes, and changing rules of propriety. Call The Midwife on PBS
Thursday, May 23rd, 2013My favorite werewolf: Monroe
Monday, April 22nd, 2013
As a rule, I don’t like werewolves, be it in books, in movies or TV series. Of late, there has been one exception: Monroe, played by Silas Weir Mitchell, from the show Grimm. (If you take a look at the video, he’s the bearded guy figured prominently in the trailer’s middle and end.) (more…)
What do you do while watching sports on TV?
Saturday, June 16th, 2012
Do you like to watch sports on TV? If so, I am sure you have watched one (or more) of those matches that were, well, a tad boring. Dragged for a while. That didn’t hold you interest because honestly, both teams were equally unappealing. On the other hand, I am sure you have also watched matches that got you so worked up that you were ready to throw the TV magazine at the screen, that you needed something, now, to distract you. In either of these cases, what do you do? (more…)
Owls
Wednesday, April 4th, 2012
I’m seriously in love with this TV spot. I enjoy the upbeat music, I don’t mind the product (Lufthansa started off as a Germany company, after all), and I absolutely adore the owls.
Here’s the translation: “Bird with cute feathers. Bird with cute eyes. Bird with a cute beak. Bird with a cute price.’”
Is this spot played outside Germany? Do you like advertisements with animals?

Bones Baby Update: Yay or nay?
Tuesday, November 22nd, 2011
We’re a few episodes into the seventh season of Bones, and last season ended on a huge cliff-hanger and game changer: Bones’ announcement of her pregnancy with Booth’s baby. Their will-they-or-won’t-they tension has been hotly debated for six seasons, and didn’t actually end when they did finally get together. there are still a lot of questions, and I don’t think anyone was quite sure how things would go when the season premiered a few weeks ago.
Personally, I’m pleased with how things are going, but I would have liked a bit more context to the situation towards the end of the season. I feel cheated out of the pleasure of seeing the other characters’ shock and excitement when the news gets out. I don’t think the chemistry between Booth and Bones has diminished, though, which is (was?) a pretty big fear of many fans.
So, what do you think so far? Were you disappointed with where the show is going, or happy? What do you think will happen through the rest of the season, and series as a whole?
The Closer
Friday, November 18th, 2011Recently Jane talked about her favorite television program, and it reminded me of mine. While I have been watching Prime Suspect this season, Detective Jane Timoney is no Brenda Leigh. (more…)
Farewell All My Children
Saturday, September 24th, 2011Every day during my freshman year in college, 12 noon marked a magic time. A huge group of us would crowd into a friend’s room in our dorm and watch All My Children. I’d never seen it before I went to college, and haven’t watched it on a regular basis since then. Still, I felt sad when I heard that the show had been cancelled after a 40-year run on TV.
The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency
Monday, August 22nd, 2011
I liked the books in The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency by Alexander McCall Smith a lot when I read them; so I was delighted to discover they had been made into a TV series, and that they would be shown on German TV. So far I have watched the pilot (directed by Anthony Minghella) and four of the six episodes, and I love them. (more…)
Criminal Minds
Monday, June 13th, 2011
Two summers ago, it was Bones. This summer, it’s Criminal Minds. It seems that when school is out and I have the novel experience of work but no homework, I tend to binge on syndicated crime dramas. Criminal Minds, like Bones, has been around for a while (5 or 6 years) which means there’s a pretty extensive list of old episodes that run in marathons.
What I like about Criminal Minds is that it’s very psychological. Rather than look at a crime after the fact, it focuses on crimes of a serial nature; the team profiles the criminal and uses that information to predict their next move and get ahead of them. Of course, given that the crimes on this show are frequently repeat crimes, often committed by people with serious issues, they tend to be the more terrifying ones: child abduction, pedophilia, serial killing, rape/murder. It is sometimes really disturbing, but it still fascinating and compelling.
As I’m new to the series, I’m still placing myself in the time line of the series. My favorite characters are Morgan and Garcia (I love their banter and flirting), and I have a soft spot for Dr. Reid too. Do you watch this show? What do you think?
Nationals
Tuesday, May 24th, 2011
Glee’s season 2 is coming to an end tonight. Will they win Nationals? I honestly don’t know. They lost last year in the Season finale, so it’s not a shoo-in for national dominance. They’ll be singing original songs again, including the one above. Apparently Charice, the singer who played Sunshine Corazon in two episodes (the girl Rachel sent to a crack house), will be back.
After last week’s episode (during which I cried, by the way — in Starbucks, where I watched it online. Awk.) I’m interested in how Sue will figure into it. I hope they don’t just backtrack and revert to her sabotaging them. It’s been funny, but it’s been 2 seasons– let’s see something new.
What did you think about this season? What are your predictions for tonight’s episode?
