It’s Pumpkin Time

I love the weeks before Halloween. It’s so much fun to see the creative ways people decorate their yards, and all of the scary (but in a nice way) products available for purchase. And of course, I really enjoy seeing the little kids dressed up in their costumes on Halloween night.

But for me, what I love most of all, is that Halloween signals the start of the ready availability of pumpkins, both canned and fresh, in my local stores. Now some (eh, probably most) of you have year-round cravings for chocolate. Me, not so much. But the moment the air starts turning crispy, I develop cravings for everything pumpkin. (more…)

Julie and Julia

julie and julia

Last night, my dreams were filled with wonderful food. Good bread, fish coated with a buttery sauce, delicious cakes, the perfect roasted chicken, and did I mention, butter. Yes, I finally got around to seeing Julie and Julia.

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. I found the parts about Julie’s blog, and her efforts to cook 524 dishes in 365 days interesting. I didn’t eat before going to the movie, and some of the dishes she made had my stomach rumbling. But for me, the best parts of the movie were the sections about Julia Child. (more…)

Fall is Coming

Lynn’s post yesterday about The Pull of the Water in the summer, and the rapidly approaching end of summer, got me thinking. I absolutely adore the summer (well, when we actually have one here), and truly wish I still lived right next to Lake Michigan. But, there are also things I look forward to about the fall (not the winter, but the fall).

I cook in a completely different way in the fall than I do in the summer. In the summer I tend to live on salads, sandwiches, fruit, and the occasional cooked meal. Once fall comes, I start making homemade soups, casseroles, roasted vegetables, and all kinds of dishes I virtually never make in the summer. While I use recipes from time to time, I also improvise a great deal with this type of cooking. (more…)

The Perfect Chocolate Milk?

chocolatemilk

Yes, I’m on a new food quest. This time, I’m looking for the perfect glass of chocolate milk. Not hot chocolate, mind you (that will come next winter, I’m sure), but cold chocolate milk.

About a month ago, I developed a craving for chocolate milk. I figure there are worse things I could crave, so headed out to the store to pick up some ready-made chocolate milk. Yuck! The store-brand I bought just didn’t taste appealing at all, and went down the drain. (more…)

Cooking Competition Shows

top chef mastersFollowing up on Sandy’s summer TV theme, this summer I’ve watched several different cooking competition shows, and have enjoyed them in varying amounts.

Top Chef Masters. This is an interesting variation on Bravo’s regular Top Chef. Instead of aspiring chefs, this features famous chefs squaring off against each other. Now we’re talking James Beard winners, owners of wildly famous restaurants. What makes it even more fun, is a number of these chefs have appeared as guest judges in the regular Top Chef. It’s fun to see them struggle with some of the challenges from the regular show. For now, I’m pulling for  Rick Bayless and Anita Lo. (more…)

Life on a Diet

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

180px-Feet_on_scaleI’m on a diet and I don’t like it.  I always gain weight in the summer as I’m not working and at home with the boys all day.  However, this year I managed to outgrow my school/work clothes, or at least they’re indecently tight.

Unfortunately, this is a normal trend for me.  I gain in the summer, spend August, September, and October losing the weigh, eat everything in sight in November and December,  and then diet and attempt to maintain in the Winter and Spring.  While I enjoy exercising (I really do!), I also like to eat, which means it’s a never ending battle.  (more…)

cookout With the 4th of July coming along tomorrow, grills all over my area will be lighting up! Even though I tend to wilt in the extreme heat and humidity of summer, there is something about a good cookout that I just love. The mingling smells of grass, sunscreen and the grill just make me happy. Good friends and a little wine don’t hurt either.
