Fifth Grade Geography

Unlike Jean I haven’t been watching the Olympics- instead just reading stories online and following the metal count.  However maybe I should be.  I was looking at the countries that had won metals and came across Belarus. And I am thinking where in the world is Belarus? So I did a little researching and per Wikipedia “Republic of Belarus is a landlocked country in Eastern Europe bordered by Russia to the northeast, Ukraine to the south, Poland to the west, and Lithuania and Latvia to the northwest. At least I have an excuse on this country because it was declared a sovereignty in 1990.  Still I couldn’t have told you where Latvia was either, and it was founded in 1918.

So I did a little more scrutinizing.  I realized if you gave me a Atlas I couldn’t tell you where the below listed countries are located.  I’m not sure I could even guess which continent they are on.

Andorra, Bahrain, Benin, Bhutan, Brunei, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Comoros, Djibouti, Eritrea, Gabon, Gambia, Kiribati, Kyrgyzstan, Lesotho, Liechtenstein, Maldives, Mauritania, Micronesia, Montenegro, Myanmar and yes there are more.

It has been  a long time since fifth grade geography.  YouTube had a wealth of information for kids, but hey I am not proud.  So for your entertainment and education – in case you are like me and don’t have a clue where Myanmar is.

Although these are not as fun as  Yakko’s version – which hasn’t been updated.

I love geography! I have a world map in my kitchen at home and another one up on my wall at work. It’s amazing how many times I look at either one, find an island or city name or whatever and think “hey, I didn’t notice that before.” :)

Yakko’s version is great, as a song – I love the rhythm and the clever rhyming. But it’s a shame that the names of the countries as sung don’t correspond with the countries he points to on the map!

    I should do that.
