The 2012 Movie Season January through March

It used to be that January through May were the dead seasons at the box office. Sure, there were surprise hits like Mall Cop but for the most part these were months reserved for horror films or a few love stories for Valentines Day.

It’s looking like the studios have put an end to that thinking at last. Which is awesome for me since I live where it is cold and icy that part of the year and going to a good movie is a wonderful way to spend a snowy day.

This year January is bringing me Underworld: Awakening, Red Tails and One for the Money. February has The Vow and Gone. And March brings the movie I feel I have been waiting forever for – The Hunger Games. I can’t imagine how this film will live up to the books but if it is even half as good, I will love it.

I also want to see John Carter. The story of a man who dies during the Civil War and reappears on Mars to fight some kind of alien battle looks fascinating. And I have to admit to being curious about 21 Jump Street. That one also makes me nervous, though. I have been seeing previews for John Carter since the fall but have yet to see anything on Jump Street. Don’t know what that means but it probably isn’t something good. Act of Valor, which according to the poster includes active duty navy SEALS will be one that probably appeals to my husband. And Mirror, Mirror, a comedic take on Snow White starring Julia Roberts looks good as well.

My youngest is still into kids films so I will be checking out The Pirates! Band of Misfits and The Lorax as well.

Below is a list of films coming out the next few months. Are there any you want to see?

I haven’t been to the movie in ages. I read the book The Help but haven’t seen the movie. I also want to see Iron Lady with Meryl Streep.

The problem with not going to the movies is that you miss the previews, so I have no idea what any of the movies you mention are about, except of course The Hunger Games.

  2. Gail says:

Among my friends and family I’m probably the most avid moviegoer and my taste is pretty eclectic. For instance the one I’m most looking forward to this week actually comes from my university’s film program, they’re showing Shanghai Express which is an old Dietrich film.
Most of the blockbusters I’m looking forward to aren’t coming out until summer though, the next Batman picture, Brave from Pixar, and Men In Black 3 pop to mind. But from the list for the next few months I’m curious about Big Miracle and Mirror, Mirror. As for the Hunger Games I’ll own my prejudice by disclosing that I own a shirt that says “The Book Was Better”.
Also, I saw free preview of Haywire earlier this week. If you’re in the mood for a solid B action movie with a genuinely badass female lead I do recommend it.

PS: Leigh, the movie studios are happy to let you watch previews online. If you check out places like IMDB or Flickster they’re easy to find.

Yep, Gail, I always watch movie previews online. And then I know a lot of times which movies I DON’T want to see because I just saw the important beginning, middle and end in about two minutes. ;) Actually the preview for 21 Jump Street is entertaining. Not sure about the entire movie.

I’m looking forward to Coriolanus and Salmon Fishing in the Yemen.

  4. Susan/DC says:

I love movies. I’m definitely looking forward to Coriolanus (Ralph Fiennes and Gerard Butler — be still my beating heart). Salmon Fishing in Yemen is worth a look for the title alone. I’ve got the book of The Woman in Black on my nightstand; I’ll wait until after I’ve read it to see if the movie interests me.

Thank you for the list. I had no idea there were so many potentially interesting movies coming out in the next few months.
