A Supernatural Addiction

I haven’t done much reading over the last week because I’ve discovered a new addiction: Supernatural. The show is now in its fifth season, but I’ve just never gotten around to watching it. Since I’ve been hearing good things I borrowed Season 1 on DVD from my sister. Last week I finally got around to checking it out — and was immediately hooked. I think I probably stayed up late every night last week, and watched all 22 episodes of the first season in about 5 days. Yeah, it’s that good. I’m on the waiting lists for Seasons Two through Four at the library, but I don’t know if I can last that long without a Sam and Dean fix. Is anybody else watching this show? Anybody else addicted like I am? If you’re not addicted to this show, what show are you addicted to?

Now I’m not someone who normally thinks babies are all cute, all the time, but this video of baby Cory dancing to Beyonce’s “Single Ladies” made even hard-hearted me laugh. (more…)

It’s Hammertime

Whenever a cool new video makes the rounds on the Internet, I’m often one of the last to know. So there’s a good chance that most of you have already seen this video. But for all of you who’re latecomers like me, I’d like to share a Hump Day* pick-me-up.  This is a video of mob dancers invading a store in L.A. and getting their groove on to M.C. Hammer’s timeless “U Can’t Touch This.” It’s Hammertime, baby.

*Get your mind out of the gutter.  I’m referring to Wednesdays being the middle of the work week, like a hill you have to climb. You’re over the hump.

My favorite audition from the first episode of So You Think You Can Dance Season 6 was tap dancer Ryan Kasprzak. Ryan was first introduced to viewers in Season 5, when he and his younger brother Evan both auditioned for the show. When it came time to fill the last slot in the Top 20, it was down to just Evan and Ryan. Evan was chosen, and went on to make it to the Top 4 in Season 5. (more…)

The Chemistry of Dance

I’m a sucker for dance movies. Serious, quirky, cheesy — you name it, if it’s a dance movie, I’ll watch it. One of my favorites is the quirky Australian film Strictly Ballroom. One of the reasons Strictly Ballroom is on my movie-DIK shelf is that it combines two of my favorite things: dance and romance. Throw in a cast of offbeat characters and a funny parody of the professional ballroom world, and I’m sold. (more…)

Wardrobe Malfunction

zipper

When I walked out the door yesterday morning, I felt cute, fresh, and ready to face the day. When I came home 9 hours later, I was hot, sticky, and cranky. All I wanted to do was change into my comfy lounging clothes and grab a book. Only, the changing clothes part of the plan hit a bit of a snag: I couldn’t get the back zipper down on my new dress. I’d had no problem getting it up that morning, but now it was firmly stuck about an inch down from the top. This wouldn’t have been a big  issue had the edges of the dress not been digging into my armpits for the last 7 hours. (Funny what you discover the first time you wear something outside of the dressing room.)

The Neuroses of Poe (the cat)

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

My adorable cat Poe started out quirky, but has become increasingly neurotic over the years. Neurotic in a cute way, though. Well, it’s cute most of the time. As in, the times when it’s not driving me crazy. When I adopted him 4 years ago and named him after the poet, I had no idea how apropos the name would turn out to be. So I thought it might be fun to share a little taste of his neuroses with all of you, along with a classic Lolcat.

Poe’s petrified of central heat and air. Seriously terrified of it. If it comes out in a vent, he’s certain it will suck the soul right out of his body. But a noisy fan? He’s down with that. (more…)

Sometimes I think I can’t get enough romance. Really. In addition to it being my genre of choice for reading material, I’ve also noticed a pattern of romance in my favorite music. Many of my favorite songs are like super short novels set to music: the meet, the conflict, the happily-ever-after. It’s gotten to the point where I’ve begun thinking of them as my three-minute romance fix.

I love all types of music, but recently I’ve been going through a heavy country and western phase. Now, ya’ll know country music is all about lovin’, drinkin’, and cheatin’, so it should come as no surprise that I’m finding a lot of romance material. While I do enjoy those drinkin’ and done-me-wrong songs, my favorites are the romances. Songs such as Billy Currington’s Good Directions, Tim McGraw’s Don’t Take the Girl, and the song in the video above, Toby Keith’s God Love Her, all have a home on my mp3 player. (more…)

The Great Hair Experiment

I love vintage (or vintage reproduction) clothing in the styles of the 1940s and 1950s U.S. For a while I’ve been slowly acquiring more and more pieces to incorporate into my wardrobe, most often through squee-inducing finds at the thrift store. But on the days I walk out of the house in vintage or vintage-inspired attire, my hair is the exception. Up until last week my hairstyle has remained decidedly modern — in other words: limp and straight.

I’ll be honest: I’m pretty lame at styling my hair. I spent most of my formative years as a tomboy with no make-up and a perma-ponytail. I’ve since learned the basics of make-up, but my hair hasn’t progressed much beyond very limited styling. Recently, though, I’ve developed a fondness for 1940s hairstyles and have wanted to incorporate them into my fashion repertoire. The problem: I had no idea how to style my hair like that.
